Worried About Hitting a Wall in Your Job Search? How to Build a Tech Career That Never Becomes Obsolete: Notes to Take Before You Apply
Graduation and job-hunting season is here! "Engineer" is one of the most popular career choices: a search on 104 Job Bank shows more than 100,000 related openings in May 2022, 22,000 of them for "software engineer." Opportunities abound, and many new graduates are gearing up to join the ranks of engineers. Reality, however, may fall short of expectations: résumés vanish without a reply, or interviews lead nowhere. How can newcomers with no experience, or career changers without a CS degree, get picked? What are the crucial things interviewers will never tell you?

3 Job-Search Trends Every Gen Z Newcomer Should Know
As a member of Gen Z, are you also losing sleep over your job search? A public report released by Microsoft last year (2021 Work Trend Index: Annual Report) found that Gen Z will have a harder time surviving in the workplace than other generations, needing to speak up more, voice their views and show enthusiasm at work. Yet since the pandemic began, WFH has become the norm, and even interviews are no longer necessarily face to face, leaving Gen Z job seekers with fewer ways to present themselves and many obstacles along the way. Mu-Fan Teng, co-founder of 5xRuby, says: "A new generation has its own way of doing things. Don't rush to send out résumés; understanding current job-search trends is how you overcome the problems."
Job-Search Trend #1: Communicate the Right Way and Limited Hands-On Experience Won't Hold You Back
Technical knowledge learned at school tends to be academic or narrow in focus. Unless you have had real industry experience, it is hard to show your strengths on a résumé from a broader perspective. Many graduates worry that their résumés contain nothing but academic theory. In fact, by communicating the right way on your résumé, concisely highlighting the hooks that interest employers, and being honest, you have a good chance of making it to the interview stage.
Job-Search Trend #2: Know Your Strengths to Balance Work and Life Effectively
The previous generation looked for work first to make a living, while this generation values work-life balance. With different career goals, the two naturally cannot use the same approach to job hunting. Tsehau Chao, co-founder of 5xRuby, believes work and life can be balanced; the key is knowing where your strengths lie before you start looking. If you want to train and keep learning, you also need to first understand your current abilities so you can build on your strengths, shore up your weaknesses, and get to where you truly want to be.
Job-Search Trend #3: Learn to Observe the Traits of In-Demand Tech Talent
Job seekers often bury themselves in preparing résumés and interviews before they have even found their footing. Are you really doing the right homework before you apply? If you don't know where to start, you can at least analyze which traits of in-demand tech talent are worth learning from, and how they manage to leave a strong impression on interviewers. Industry trends that schools don't teach can be found on many job sites, blogs, books and magazines, so don't overlook this step.
