[Community News Release] Ruby Jam Party Returns in 2023 as 40 Developers Gather to Celebrate Ruby's 30th Anniversary
After a three-year hiatus, Ruby Taiwan's in-person community event "Ruby Jam Party" returned last month (on the 21st). Ruby Taiwan organizer Mu-Fan Teng said he was thrilled and deeply moved that the meetup, suspended during the pandemic, was finally back. Even more moving, he added, was that alongside seasoned engineers, many new faces joined this technical exchange. With mouthwatering pizza, free-flowing chilled drinks, sodas and other soft drinks on hand, the event got underway.

The gathering happened to coincide with Ruby's 30th anniversary, so the organizers opened the event with a big celebration cake. In a pleasant surprise, Matz (Yukihiro Matsumoto), the creator of Ruby, greeted the attendees by video. In just ten minutes, Matz shared how he felt creating Ruby amid the bursting of Japan's economic bubble. He said that within the ever-growing Ruby community he can feel the passion every Rubyist has for Ruby, and in particular how everyone is willing to give their time and contribute their strength to keep the community vibrant. Sharing an update on his life, Matz mentioned that he now spends less time writing code and more time thinking about and managing the community. Finally, he closed the video with a heartfelt message to the Ruby enthusiasts in the room, thanking everyone who loves the Ruby language for making his work all the more meaningful!
Besides celebrating Ruby's 30th birthday, the first Ruby Jam Party also featured a technical session to recharge attendees' knowledge: "Ruby the command." Veteran Rubyist Dadou demonstrated how Ruby works alongside the operating system, how it can easily replace POSIX utilities, how to use Ruby together with other CLI tools, and how to build CLI tools with Ruby. Dadou also generously shared some of Ruby's hidden tricks on site, which the audience loved.
